525770 330873710316163 146805978722938 816295 12

Casey Coller has been a mainstay on IDW Publishing's Transformers comics for the past several years. Casey took some time away from the drawing table to sit down and talk with us!

TRANSFORMERS: Hi Casey. From what age did you start drawing, and were Transformers some of the first things you drew?

CASEY COLLER: Actually, yes... I remember when I was young, probably around seven years old; one of the first things I ever felt inclined to draw was my toy Transformers. It must have been a birthday or Christmas, and I got a new set of markers and a pad of paper. I literally put my toy on the paper, traced it with a black marker, and then filled in the rest with the colored markers. I quickly became obsessed with drawing them (as well as other toys, video game and cartoon characters).

TF: Did you always know that you wanted to draw comics or was that something you decided on in late life?

CC: I was probably in about 6th or 7th grade when I really started to seriously get into comics. Besides the Marvel Transformers comic, I became interested in the X-Men, Spider-Man and other Marvel titles. It was around that time that I first started to think I could pursue comic art as a career.

TF: Can you remember how it felt when you first saw your first published Transformers work?

CC: Kind of surreal, actually. My first published work was a "Retailer Exclusive" cover for IDW's All Hail Megatron #1, for a UK-based retailer called Apocalypse Comics. I was invited to a UK convention called London Film and Comic-Con (I am US-based), and made my first trip across the pond for the event. It wasn't until I was in another country that I actually held my first published work in my hands! People lined up to grab a signed copy of the book. I signed all weekend and we sold hundreds of copies. I never imagined an experience like that for my first published work!

TF: Up to this point, which single issue would you say has been the most fulfilling to work on?

CC: That's kind of a tough one... I guess I would say Ironhide #4. Mike Costa wrote the issue, half of which was supposed to be strictly action, and he gave me a ton of creative freedom to do whatever I wanted with those pages. Each page had very little instruction, and I was able to just go wild. I do have to give honorable mention to the Spotlight: Drift comic also. I enjoyed being able to design a Decepticon commander (Turmoil—who will be returning in the Robots in Disguise ongoing series), and be involved in the introduction of Drift to the world. People still connect me with the character. I'm asked to sketch him at conventions more than any other character—even Prime!

TF: Who would you say are the easiest and hardest characters to draw from Transformers?

CC: The easiest would be the old familiar characters in their Generation-One styles. Jazz, Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Ironhide... I feel like I can practically draw them with my eyes closed! Hardest would be anything from the live-action movies. I got the hang of drawing Prime for a while, but that's about it!

TF: Are there any characters from Transformers that you haven’t drawn yet but would like to draw in the future?

CC: I've drawn most of them at this point. Though believe it or not, until I did the recent fill-in pages for R.I.D. #5 I hadn't officially drawn G1 Bumblebee! If you had asked me a couple months ago, that would have been my answer I have to say, I’ve always thought Stepper (the Japanese Targetmaster repaint of Jazz) would be a lot of fun to introduce to the US fiction.

TF: Do you have a single Transformers TV series that you like better than all the others? And likewise, do you have a favorite single comic issue as well?

C: I haven’t had a chance to watch Prime yet, though I hear great things about it. I really enjoyed watching Animated with my daughter. But I’d have to say that I grew up on Generation One. So it's got that childhood nostalgia aspect to it that I’ll always feel. As for single comic issue? I'd say Marvel comics issue 70: "The Price of Life." Looking back, that was the issue where my perception of the comic changed from being a cool story about these toys, to having a genuine emotional investment in the characters. The weight of the fiction became so much more significant.

TF: You stepped away from doing interiors for a while to concentrate on covers. You’ve recently done 5 pages inside Robots in Disguise #5. Was it good to get back to doing interiors again?

CC: Yeah, it was nice. It’s funny... I've been doing the covers for Robots in Disguise, so I get to read the scripts. And even though I’m happy doing covers, I do get the itch to do interiors when I read through them. I’m always thinking about how I’d lay out the pages or draw certain characters (or when there's a big crowd scene I’m thinking that I’m glad Andrew [Griffith]’s drawing it and not me!—haha!). I do get a lot of satisfaction out of telling a good story with my artwork, and I miss that. If I had the time, I would love to do interiors again.

TF: Outside of Transformers, what other characters from Film/TV would you like to draw for?

CC: I’d love to take a crack at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I think True Blood would be fun (especially since IDW has the license!). I guess you wouldn’t count them as Film/TV characters, but many of the classic Marvel characters are high on my list as well, starting with Spider-Man and the X-Men.

TF: Would you say are the most important tips you would give to a new artist trying to break in at the moment?

CC: Keep working on your craft. If you enjoy it, just keep doing it. You improve by leaps and bounds just by repetition. Also, try to walk that fine line between being persistent, and being annoying. Make yourself known. Send lots of samples (and I mean make new ones each time, not keep sending the same stuff). Go to cons and meet editors and talk to pros. Take their tips, advice and constructive criticism. Be confident, but keep your ego in check when it comes to taking criticism. Always look to improve!

TF: Where would you like to see yourself in 5-10 years time?

CC: Well, I’d love to still be involved in the Transformers brand in some way. I’d also love to have a creator-owned title out there in the comic world. That was always my ultimate dream. I’ve got a ton of characters with untapped potential! But I'm also a realist. As long as I can feed my family and keep some sort of positive impact on the world, I'll be happy.

Q: Hi, Andrew. As we’re approaching the end of Robots in Disguise’s first year—how has it has been for you?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Oh, it's been fantastic. I’m enjoying working on this book as much now as when I first began. I mean, nothing can beat the initial thrill of getting a call to take on the art chores for an ongoing Transformers series, but the fun and challenge of it has not dwindled a bit. I even recently tweeted the fact that it's been a year and a half since I got that call and I'm still as excited to be on the book now as I was then.

Q: You and writer John Barber have been working very closely on the look and feel on this book. Has it changed much from where you started out to where you are now?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: John Barber the writer? For a second, I was afraid you were asking me about the John Barber responsible for the development of rail gun technology. No really, look it up. Same name.

Parenthetical humor aside, John’s a dream to work with. We’ve been working together since July of 2010 when we started the Dark of the Moon movie prequel series Foundation, and I feel like it didn’t take us long at all to meld with each other’s storytelling ideas. I really notice as I read his scripts that he’s writing them specifically for me—he’s gotten to know what he has to detail out for me, and what he can let me take hold of and run with.

That man is writing so many different things now, as well as editing a few more, that I don’t know how he manages to keep each book straight—but working closely with him for so long I haven’t seen any less commitment or intensity from him on the part of RID. It’s kind of amazing. He just chugs right along. As far as the look and feel, I think it’s stayed pretty consistent over the issues. We’re really been trying to do some world building, with Iacon changing constantly as more ships arrive, ships are converted into buildings, and civilization takes hold. Meanwhile, this relatively settled section is surrounded by an entire planet that's been reborn and essentially unexplored. We've been working to establish a mix of strange structures naturally forming, ruined husks of ancient Cybertronian structures, and bizarre alien landscapes. Hopefully that comes across in the books.

Q: What characters have you been finding more of a challenge to draw, and do any of them come as a surprise to you? I bet there are some you can do with your eyes closed.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: I don’t know what it is, but for some reason whenever I draw a Sweep's decapitated head in RID (specifically in issue 5) it never looks right to me. Something about the boxiness of the helmet, I think.

Q: You did a different design for Starscream before going for the War for Cybertron designs. How many of the characters did you re-design that weren’t used?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Well, truth to be told, not too many. I knew the series was going to feature Bumblebee, so my thought was to nail down (no pun intended) Bee’s look, and then base the aesthetic of the rest of the characters off of his appearance. I ended up doing about three Bumblebee designs that were never good enough that I’d want show them to anybody, and then I did some of characters like Prowl and Starscream. The Starscream one is the one you’re talking about, but looking back I don’t think the Prowl one would have worked well at all for his role in the series and I don’t know that I’d ever want to show him off. Just not a very good design in retrospect.

Q: Any stand out issues for you during this first year that surprised you?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: You know, I really enjoyed #4. When I first read that issue, I was instantly eager to draw it. On one level it read as a fairly straightforward action issue, but underneath there were a to of things going on, some of which has yet to be revealed to the reader. But I think eventually people will be able to look back at that issue and see it in a different light and say “ooooohhhhhhh.”

Q: Would you say that you’ve changed much as an artist during the year as you’ve done more and more issues?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Well, I hope so. I always want to be improving as an artist. I definitely feel like I can confidently turn out a competent page at a faster rate than I could have at the beginning. And there are certain things I wish I would have drawn differently in the first few issues, like Bumblebee and Prowl’s heads. I don’t know what it is about Bee, if I’m not careful I just end up making his head wider and wider and wider.

Q: You went to San Diego Comic Con this year, met the fans, signed many things and talked giant robots. How’d you find it? Was it a fun experience?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Well, I’ve gone to a number of conventions this year, and from all the fans I’ve talked to, they are all really excited about what is going on in Transfomers comics, so it's been really encouraging. That’s a very rewarding thing to hear, that what you're pouring your heart and soul and time into is being appreciated. The highlight of SDCC for me is always getting to see the people there that I never get to see otherwise, and getting to meet and talk with [legendary G.I. Joe writer] Larry Hama and [legendary Transformers writer] Flint Dille for example. But the best part was probably finally meeting John Barber and [editor] Carlos Guzman, who I’d been working closely with for two years by that point but had never met in person.

Q: From the characters you’ve designed for the series, which one of them would you like to see turned into a toy? If you were given the choice.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: I’m pretty happy with what I’ve come up with for the Constructicons, they retain enough of their G1 appearance while still looking like Cybertronian in nature. It’d be pretty awesome for me to see a Generations-line Devastator combiner based on them, similar to the combining Fall of Cybertron Bruticus toy that’s out.

Q: As we’re wrapping up the first year, there’s still to more issues to go until we hit #12. is there anything little snippets you can say without giving to much away?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Well, I can’t say too much without IDW snipers placed across the street filling me with tranquilizers and shipping me off to Siberia, but I can promise that issues 11 to 15 are ones not to be missed. By the end of that arc, you'll have a lot of questions answered, some long unseen characters make an appearance, and some resolution to the first year’s over-arching story. Basically, it’s good stuff. I just hope I can draw it as well as it’s written.

Q: Heading into year 2, you’ve probably been talking with John Barber about the future. Anything you can say about what the fans could possibly expect?

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Yeah, we had a chance at SDCC to sit down and bounce ideas off of each other. A bit early to see if he uses any of mine. [Laughs] In all seriousness, one of the great things about John is how he’s so open to collaboration between us, and if he likes an idea I have, he’s not too proud to use it in the story. If it seems like I’m avoiding spoilers as far as where the story is going, I am. It’s hard to discuss it without giving too much away. But I will say that John and I are both excited about where things are headed.

Aaron Long: In Transformers: Robots in Disguise you just took Optimus Prime on a mind-bending adventure through space and time. Can you discuss how this has mentally prepared him for what is occurring on Cybertron?

John Barber: Well, his focus is decidedly not on Cybertron at the moment. Optimus Prime–or Orion Pax as he’s calling himself these days–exiled himself from the planet responded to a call from some other Autobots in space who were guarding the captured mad scientist Jhiaxus. Who promptly escaped, and Pax and the other Autobots followed, and just found themselves in a… well, you were right to call it “mind-bending.” They found themselves caught in a situation that seems like it was carefully orchestrated by Jhiaxus’ student, Shockwave. From Pax arriving, to Jhiaxus’ escape, to the search for the 13 Ores that Shockwave planted in different worlds–all of it seems like part of a big master plan. Shockwave is back on Cybertron, pulling strings from a distance. He’s been unusually quiet during the rebuilding of Cybertron that Robots in Disguise has been focusing on–but his movements have become more overt. This will actually come to a head in the next issue of RID, #11 (that the exceptional Guido Guidi drew). Now some ‘bots on Cybertron know that Shockwave is up to something–and nobody’s going to be happy with that. But there are plenty of other Transformers with agendas and big plans competing on Cybertron… But in the respect of knowing that Shockwave has his fingers (plus his gun-hand) in some off-world actions–in that respect, Orion Pax has some crucial information for Cybertron… but Cybertron’s going to have some other problems to deal with first, in the form of the looming elections between Bumblebee, Starscream, and Metalhawk. And, er, maybe a surprise dark horse candidate, in a manner of speaking.

AL: The series has been focusing on two of the most cunning and devious characters in the Transformers Universe: Shockwave & Jhiaxus. From a plotting perspective, is it difficult keeping the machinations of this pair going forward without giving away too many details too quickly?

JB: Like I said, Shockwave was keeping pointedly quiet through most of RID. Suspiciously so. Keeping track of what he was doing behind the scenes, and when he was doing what–well, that’s part of the overall story going on. Lots of characters have secret goings-on, so it’s part of the challenge to keep up with everybody. What they’re saying versus what they really mean, and who’s really controlling who.

AL: In the upcoming issue you will be bringing back “an old friend”. Can you discuss the impact of this character’s return on the series? Will the tensions on Cybertron be pushed even further to the breaking point with their arrival?

JB: Tensions will be pushed very much past the point of breaking. Everything comes apart in issue 12.

AL: As an editor as well as a writer, do you find it hard to turn off ‘editor-mode’ while scripting? Or are you constantly reviewing your script as you would something written by someone else?

JB: Well, that’s healthy. I mean, if you write and don’t look at your work with a critical eye–don’t edit yourself at all–you’ve got a serious problem. I mean, you have to just press through things sometimes, write through stuff that isn’t working and then come back to it later and make it work. But it’s not like the “writer” part of me doesn’t care about story logic or the “editor” side doesn’t care about making it exciting. They’re on the same side. Carlos Guzman, who’s my actual editor on RID, he’s utterly invaluable to the process. He looks at the scripts and tells me what’s not working and his instincts are dead on. Likewise Michael Kelly at Hasbro, who’s also really involved in all this. But, well–important tip for anybody that wants to write comics: DEFINITELY REVIEW YOUR SCRIPT AS YOU WOULD SOMETHING WRITTEN BY SOMEONE ELSE. That is literally the only way anybody but you will ever read your stuff.

AL: Any final words for Comicosity’s readers regarding Transformers: Robots in Disguise?

JB: Thanks for everybody that’s been reading! The response has been phenomenal to this and our sister title, TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE. Both our 2012 Annuals just sold out at the distributor level (meaning your store might have some copies left but they can’t order more–and stores are definitely trying!) so we’re going back to press on them. People’s excitement is still high on these comics! If you haven’t tried the book–or you’ve never read a Transformers comic before–give it a try! As our readers can attest–it’s not what you expect. Artist Andrew Griffith and I try to mix politics, action, intrigue, and powerful personalities in every issue–and things are really coming to a boil now, as we close in on the climax of our first big story.

Q: Hi John. Robots in Disguise is almost a year old now. Has everything panned out as smoothly as you had hoped in the story you are telling?
JOHN BARBER: Hi! Well, we’ve stuck pretty close to the original ideas. New things have definitely cropped up, new ideas pop in all the time, but the essential story Andrew Griffith and I set out to tell over the first year or so has gone according to plan. Along the way there’ve been some nice synchronicities, some characters have asserted themselves in ways that either made them bigger characters or that changed the way the story unfolded, but overall, yeah.

Q: You’ve been trying to make sense of some continuity issues that have cropped up. Is this something you really wanted to try in fix from past TF comics?
JOHN BARBER: It’s not really that I set out to fix things as much as sometimes little continuity things suggest interesting stories or directions. Like, with Metalhawk—when More Than Meets The Eye writer James Roberts and I were working on The Death of Optimus Prime, James had come up with the notion of having a character be the de facto leader of the neutral Cybertronians who were returning home. I thought it’d be cool to use an existing Transformers character that we hadn’t seen yet—somebody that would have resonance with some fans, but it wouldn’t be essential that anybody know who he is.
We bounced some ideas between us and Andy Schmidt, who was the editor then, and to Michael Kelly at Hasbro. Eventually, James suggested Metalhawk. A quick internet search showed that Metalhawk had appeared in one panel in the Drift limited series. Or, anyway, somebody that looked an awful lot like Metalhawk was there. Alex Milne had drawn him in as, basically, a random ’bot. Nobody called him Metalhawk, he didn’t do anything particularly important. And it would have been pretty easy to just ignore that. And, honestly—and I know some fans vehemently disagree with what I’m about to say—I think it would have been fair to just write that off as “somebody that looks like Metalhawk” if it got in the way of the story. But it got me thinking, and I thought it could be kind of cool if that were Metalhawk, and even though he’s only got that one panel in the Drift comic, that battle had actually been a key part of Metalhawk’s life. And that created an opportunity to bring Turmoil (who I think is an awesome character who deserved more of an on-panel life) back and have it mean something personal to somebody that Turmoil was around. So that panel just suggested some depth to the then-just-being-developed-in-current-continuity Metalhawk. Hopefully, in practice, it doesn’t matter to the RID reader if they ever see that panel, but I think it’s fun that that panel is there. It creates a wider, more coherent tapestry of stories, without being obtrusive or stopping us from moving forward.

Q: After seeing all of the previous TF work, how hard did you find it get into the characters heads and come up with their voices and point of views?
JOHN BARBER: Well, over my life I’ve spent a fair amount of time with these characters—reading the comics, watching the cartoons and movies, playing with the toys when I was young—so I had some thoughts about the characters. There were some that, over the years, had been portrayed in ways that didn’t exactly match up all the way, which is just the reality of what happens when you have an ongoing comic book universe with different writers and artists playing in the same sandbox.
But, again, that was an opportunity. Real people do contradictory things, real people change their approaches over the years. We react differently to different situations. So I tried to use those different reactions and figure out what might make these particular iterations of these guys tick. I tried to give the characters distinct points of view and voices based on what we’d seen them do over the course of all the IDW-published comics, and also what the sort-of “classic” versions of the characters are. I like using the big characters, and some of them have developed really interesting backstories, but that’s mostly how I view the previous stories, in practical storytelling terms. I mean, not that my stories are better, I just mean that as a writer, you have to focus on the story you’re telling, not a previous story. As a reader, you shouldn’t need to know the details of the character’s lives to follow what they’re doing now, or to enjoy them as characters… but if you do want to know about their life stories—a lot of it’s been published!

Q: Can you say much about your grand plan when you started writing RID? Did you have this time of peace on the re-born Cybertron well plotted out?
JOHN BARBER: Yeah, the big arc of the first year or so, definitely. It’s really about 16 issues that will get you a big climax to the story begun in issue 1. But not an end to the RID saga, I should add. That definitely keeps going! Like I said, some of it changed a little, but the broad strokes are the same.
There were certain stories I wanted to hit—RID was never meant to be only about the political struggle. I wanted to have a story about somebody coming home trying to fit in on this world; a wilderness story; a story about the city surviving the changed environment of the planet. I feel like we did pretty well hitting those stories and still moving forward with a big, macro story about the power struggle in Iacon.

Q: Have you had to change or adapt how you write the stories, maybe based on something you’ve seen coming up in maybe an issue of More Than Meets the Eye (RID’s sister title)?
JOHN BARBER: We toss ideas back and forth all the time, James and I. So yeah, we’re constantly affecting what each other are doing. We’ve managed to not screw each other up, though, with our stories. If that’s what you mean.

Q: Have you found it difficult to keep a track of events in RID, especially with issues such as the time travelling space ship causing chaos (at least for the characters)?
JOHN BARBER: Yeah… it’s funny. I really intentionally focused in on five key players—Bumblebee, Ironhide, Prowl, Wheeljack, and Starscream—with Metalhawk playing a huge outsider role for most of the series. But as the series went on, a lot of other characters became important, too. So keeping track of where everybody is and where they wind up by issue 16 has been constantly on my mind.
Issue 10, with the time-traveling space-ship… that was it’s own beast. That was hard to keep track of on a totally different level. And I’m happy people came along for that ride.

Q: Is there any one stand-out moment from the first year of RID that you are most proud of over the others?
JOHN BARBER: Yes, but I can’t say what it is yet without giving things away.

Q: A certain character re-appears in issue 11 of RID. Had the return of this character been in your mind right from the very start?
JOHN BARBER: Yes, absolutely. Don’t miss today’s issue! Everything changes here.

Q: Between writing RID and editing the books across the TF license, would you say its one of the most challenging jobs you’ve done in comics?
JOHN BARBER: Sure, yeah. I mean, I edit more than just the Transformers comics, too—I work on G.I. Joe with Carlos Guzman, and on Dungeons & Dragons, and on a few other comics, too. So it’s a lot of good stuff to get to do. There’s definitely a lot of Transformers comics across a lot of timelines, but it’s a good challenge.

Q: Anything you can say about season 2 of RID? Can you say about possible happenings or characters that may reappear?
JOHN BARBER: Two words: purple reign.

PAGE 1- Starscream is talking to the comatose Megatron, who was heavily blasted by the Autobots in the previous issue. Given these 2 have so much history between them across the Transformers franchise, how do you go about putting another spin or direction with them, showing us something brand new between them?

JOHN BARBER: I think there’s been a conceptual change in their relationship. It isn’t that Starscream is trying to usurp Megatron, or trying to fill Megatron’s shoes anymore—it’s that Starscream has found more of a Starscream-way to get what he wants. The problem is that he knows Megatron will bring in the old status quo of Autobots versus Decepticons—and Starscream knows neither of them will win that way.

In next month’s TRANSFORMERS SPOTLIGHT: MEGATRON comic that Nick Roche wrote and drew, we see them at an earlier point in their history—not long before the start of the current ROBOTS IN DISGUISE and MORE THAN MEETS THE EYES comic book series, The relationship then is very different. I think comparing the two comics really makes the changes that occurred to Starscream over the last couple years.

PAGE 2- Starscream continues talking to Megatron, until he sees him smile. Right now, does Starscream really believe in the whole peace concept, or could this just be another one of his games that he plays?

JOHN BARBER Starscream is a complicated fellow. This whole issue is from Starscream’s point of view—and it’s the second of those in a very short amount of time. So despite the fact that we, as readers, really get to see in Starscream’s head… I don’t think the answer to what Starscream really believes in is clear yet.

I think he’s being pretty honest in what he says to Megatron, though.

PAGE 3- Starscream reacts to Megatron’s “smile” as rioting continues on Cybertron. When planning out RID, was this scene something you thought up very early and worked on from that point?

JOHN BARBER: Well, Megatron’s return was part of the story from day one, and the impact that return would have on Iacon was planned from the beginning. Starscream’s relationship with Megatron—or his relationship with the idea of Megatron—was definitely key to the whole story of RID, so that was pretty solidly in place.

The idea of Starscream trying to talk Megatron out of what Starscream assumes he’s doing… that came a little bit later. I mean, the series wasn’t constructed to work toward this scene; this scene came out of what the story was working towards.

PAGES 4 and 5- Chaos continues on as Needlenose continues to lead the rioting and Starscream reflects on what happened the previous year and where he stands. Is the established peace about to literally blow up in its face from this point? The planets future is starting to look dark again.

JOHN BARBER: I don’t know if it ever looked that bright. But you’ve hit the question right on the head, so to speak. There are enough Decepticons—and we’ve definitely seen enough Autobots, too—that, at some level, want the war to continue. It’s the only life they’ve known, and there are also millions-of-year-old resentments that don’t die easy. The Decepticons have been pushed to the side for the entire run of RID. There’s only so far you can stretch them before they break.

PAGE 1- The rioting Decepticons, as seen in the previous issue, are gone thanks to Metalhawk's efforts. Having introduced the character in the first year of RID, how do you think the character has changed from issue 1 to where we are now?
JOHN BARBER: Metalhawk was away from the action for most of the war. When he came back to Cybertron, back at the start of this series, he didn’t know who was who, who’d done what, or why anybody was acting like they were. He’s definitely learned the lay of the land since then, but he’s still very much an outsider in terms of really understanding the main conflict. He gets it a little more now, but he hasn’t been on the front lines like Bumblebee or the others.
As readers, I think we’ve learned more about him, and what makes him tick, a little more. At first, the idea was that we wouldn’t be able to tell if he was honest or if he had Machiavellian plans going on. Plus, as readers, we’ve been privy to all kinds of details about the Autobot/Decepticon war, and that, combined with Metalhawk’s general demeanor, kinda made him irritating. Now I think we know him a little more—we’ve seen his contradictions and his flaws and he’s a little more human… well, you know what I mean. I know some people don’t trust him yet—fans, I mean—and maybe they’re right.
Whatever the case—he can still be pretty insufferable. But he was able to get most of the population off the streets, when Starscream and Bumblebee’s efforts were fruitless.

PAGE 2- Metalhawk reports in and Prowl’s deception from the previous issue is revealed. Events have been building up to the next few moments. When actually coming to doing the issue, were any pages like this clearly pre-though out or did they just lay themselves in any surprising ways?
JOHN BARBER: Well, everything with Prowl was planned from the outset, and his actions over the course of the series were very deliberate. I mean, everything he did had to map onto what he was pretending to do, and also what he was actually doing. If that makes sense. Like, if Prowl gave an impassioned speech to Bumblebee to keep Bee going, it had to make sense in terms of what the reader thinks Prowl was doing, not just what artist Andrew Griffith (and editor Carlos Guzman) knew he was really doing.
So, in that sense, everything had to be pretty much thought out. In terms of this scene, and the reactions of characters… Blurr is ready to believe the worst—and not without reason—but even Sideswipe has to admit he sees his point. There are little surprises here and there with how characters have grown over the series, and how they react to events. Like, when Bumblebee ordered that the Autobots open fire on Megatron when he returned—that wasn’t in the original outline, I just realized that that was what Bumblebee would do at that point. And Megatron wasn’t counting on that, either, so events had to adjust. Anyway—Andrew just does such a great job making it all sing and acting the reactions of Sideswipe and Blurr and everybody.

PAGE 3- Dirge reveals that Prowl has been working with the recently returned Megatron for quite some time. It’s a question of what to do next. With his world collapsing around him, is the focus still going to be how Bumblebee deals with situations as a leader, even in the most dire of circumstances?
JOHN BARBER: Well, Dirge doesn’t say anything about time, or how long anything’s been going on.
Bumblebee… well, it would be nice if Bumblebee figured out what to do here, yeah.

PAGE 4- Prowl and the Decepticons together, and Megatron requires a new body. How much design work goes into producing these Cybertronian looks for the characters? Are they made with other products in mind?
JOHN BARBER: It’s super-easy for me! I just type their names and say to make them look cool, and boom, there they are!
Seriously, Andrew Griffith knocks himself out on these. He sometimes bases the designs on existing toys or on the video game looks, but always brings a little flair to it. And other times they’re new designs entirely, like Prowl… and you’ll find out why Prowl is like that later this issue.
We don’t really have other products like toys in mind per se, but there’s a lot of back and forth between the comics and the toys, as you might have seen at Toyfair, where Hasbro revealed some new Transformers figures that tie in directly with the comics. It’s all great fun—the guys making the toys are loving what we’re doing; everybody making the comics are loving what they’re doing. It’s a fun time.

PAGE 5- Bumblebee, Metalhawk and others are pondering about the Decepticons next move. This issue marks a huge shift in the series. Has it always been the intention to explore the facets of peace and how they affect a given society?
JOHN BARBER: Um. Yeah, this is a big change. We’ve been looking at how a society tries to stay together, and rebuild after a war. There are always questions of freedom and security and justice looming over everybody. Sometimes imagined threats, or perceived problems, can give room for bigger, real threats and problems to grow. It’s also about a society trying to change… there are always forces from within that want to stop any change from occurring.

TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE #15 hits the stands today, courtesy of IDW Publishing and Hasbro! Bumblebee and his provisional government have had to face a lot over the past year… but they never imagined they’d have to fight an angry Devastator with Prowl as its head! In honor of this action-packed issue, we sat down with artist Andrew Griffith to take a look at his original pencil art! The comic, by Griffith and writer John Barber is available at comic book stores everywhere and at https://transformers.comixology.com/ or via the Comixology and iBooks apps on your computer or mobile device!

PAGE 1- We’re inside the Autobot Med-Center as the action goes on outside—there’s quite a few different ’bots in here, all—of course—with different designs. Did you spend a lot of times on this page, making sure everyone was correct and adding the various states of damage? ANDREW GRIFFITH: Well, since I only pencilled this, I had to leave a lot of that up to the inker [Brian Shearer]. Maybe it’s just me, but I find I can only put so much detail in with pencil before it becomes a smudgy mess. But I did make sure to let Brian and [colorist] Josh [Perez] know who the guys were, that were intended to be specific characters.

PAGES 2 and 3: When designing Devastator, did you have any kind of specific brief to follow, other than including Prowl as a vital component? And were you given much freedom in the design? ANDREW GRIFFITH: Yes, there were definitely specific aspects of his design to keep in mind, some of which I shouldn’t even hint at so as not to ruin anything about issue 16. I had a good bit of freedom in his design. The toughest part was the fact that John wanted Prowl to be the head and part of the torso, so I wouldn’t be able to just use Prowl as a leg in place of the deceased Scrapper. And I wanted to keep some of what Guido [Guidi] designed for ALL HAIL MEGATRON, so hopefully there was some of that look still there. I did have to add the purple chest shield back in though, because if I would have left it off like Guido did, Prowl’s integration into Long Haul’s section just didn’t look very good.

PAGE 4: The Autobots fight Devastator, which doesn’t seem to go well. When doing the drawings, do you take a much of a vested interest in the characters, knowing what might happen further down the line, and maybe not denting up the ones you like better as much as others? ANDREW GRIFFITH: Doesn’t go well for the Autobots, you mean? Seems to go pretty well for Devastator, though. Well, the way John likes things to go, everyone ends up pretty well beat-up and dented. But sometimes damage to a particular character has to be kept in mind very specifically, such as Metalhawk’s gutshot wound, or Bumblebee’s crumpled face. The best stories are character driven as far as I’m concerned, and the characters are what draw me most to Transformers, so I think it’s safe to say I take a lot of stock in how the designs and wear and tear reflect on specific characters. There’s some battle damage that’s appeared in recent issues that even provides a bit of foreshadowing, if you know where to look.

PAGE 5: Megatron watches as the destruction on Cybertron continues. Again, with Megatron in his new body, why did you make the choices you did in this design? Were there many different versions before settling on what we see here? ANDREW GRIFFITH: Not really, this was the only real design that I came up with. The idea was to make a Megatron that was indicative of both his original G1 look and his pre-Earth comics design, as seen in STORMBRINGER. Sort of your quintessential Megatron. So… hopefully, I pulled it off. I hope to get the design I did for him out somewhere in the near future, as well as some of my designs for Devastator and how Prowl’s section fits in.

PAGE 1- The might against Megatron continues with Bumblebee and his team. Considering the different factions trying to live together on their home world, was there ever a right or wrong in the decisions he took? Or was it simply that he wasn’t strong enough to hold them all together?
JOHN BARBER: That’s a good question. Bumblebee was trying to do what was right, and here—battling Megatron—it’s clear what needs to get done. But would Megatron have had support, would the Decepticon masses have followed him, had it not been for Bumblebee’s policies? He locked them up, he put in the Identification/Deterrence chips, and even once those were gone, he still clearly didn’t welcome them with open arms. I mean, Bumblebee had reason to be angry at the Decepticons, and reasons to not trust them. So maybe he never had a chance.
There isn’t really a clear-cut answer, as to whether Bee was right or wrong, and that’s one of the big themes of the series. I hope the readers will argue about it.
Was Bumblebee too weak? That’s how he sees himself, and how some of the others see him. Maybe he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, though. Could anybody have accomplished what he set out to do? Again—I don’t mean to evade the question, it’s that the question is the main thing about the series. I don’t want to cop out on anything, but the question is more interesting to me. And hey, if I had the actual answer, I should be ruling the world myself.

PAGE 2- Megatron, Devastator and the other Decepticons pile on the pressure. You think right now Starscream is regretting the things that he has done prior to this issue, and not done what might have previously done before?
JOHN BARBER: Starscream thought he was playing everything correctly for a while—up to issue 11—then he had a crisis of… well, not “conscious,” as this issue will demonstrate… but a crisis of faith in himself. I’m sure that, in his head, he’s running through every action he’s ever taken, but I don’t think he has Bumblebee’s capacity for self-reflection. He’s more likely to see any failure as a failure of circumstance, not of himself. But this was a big fall—he was about to gain control of the city, and then Megatron showed up and ruined everything, so it’s a crushing blow.
Anyway—he definitely doesn’t have Bee’s capacity for beating himself up over his decisions.Actually, his ego probably protects him a little here (like Prowl’s does).
What is why, at this point in the story, even if it doesn’t look like it, he is actively looking for any opportunity amidst all the action.

PAGE 3- Arcee and Sideswipe do their best to carry on the fight back. With Arcee, was the plan always to make her as ambiguous as possible until she was forced into making a decision on where she truly stood?
JOHN BARBER: Yeah—Issue 18 is where we actually get into her head, and see how she thinks. She just approaches things from a way that other Cybertronians don’t. Her worldview is skewed by all the events in her life—I mean, everybody’s is; it’s just that her event are just a little more unusual.
So, yeah, she was definitely keeping quiet about what she knew, who she would side with, all that—until she had an opportunity to strike most effectively. Which, I don’t think exactly worked out—she definitely didn’t want out-of-control Prowl-Devastator running around, so it’s not like she actually succeeded in her plan. But things could have been worse.
Nevertheless, from my perspective, she’d have been better off going to Bumblebee in issue 4. But she didn’t think he’d trust her, and Bee definitely didn’t act like he was looking to trust Prowl’s secret warrior. So she didn’t think that was a legitimate possibility. And now, hey, look what all that mistrust has sown.

PAGE 4- Ironhide and the Dinobots pile in to provide reinforcements? Considering what is happening to his friends, do you think Ironhide is certain that the visions of the future he saw are going to come true, despite the devastation around him? They seem to have been driving his recent actions.
JOHN BARBER: Ironhide has come to realize that, even if he believes what he saw, there are multiple ways of looking at “fate.” He can just sit back and let the future happen, or he can take an active role. And if he takes an active role, he has to be himself. Beyond that—well, there’s more to come.

PAGE 5- Ironhide literally tries to knock some sense into Prowl/ Devastator’s head, and Bumblebee can see the tide of battle turning. This issue marks the end of the current arc in the series. In the grand scheme of things to come, how important are the issues we’ll find within these pages?
JOHN BARBER: Very. I mean, this issue is the close of the first big RID story arc. The story of Bumblebee versus Starscream versus Metalhawk struggling for control of Iacon comes to a close this issue. And however it works out, any one of them (or none of them) “winning” control of the city will change the face of Cybertron. There’s a lot going on in this issue, a lot of stories coming to a close, and it all matters a lot.
But it’s not the end of the series, and there are still going to be big, pointed questions looming. Where’s Shockwave? Why did what happened to the Aerialbots happen—and what’s the status of them now? Not to give anything away, but how does Starscream justify his actions? What’s up with Ironhide’s vision of the future? What does Jhiaxus want with Gorlam Prime? Lots and lots of other questions…
Not everything ends here—we’re back with another issue in a few weeks—but all that comes will be built on what we’ve done here. And there will be impacts felt in our sister series, TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE, too. But I can’t talk about that without spoiling anything. I can say, that events from MTMTE spill into RID next issue… but if you’ve followed what MTMTE revealed about Shockwave, I don’t think that will be a surprise. Anyway—this comic, RID #16, will have repercussions in the comics—and maybe beyond—for some time to come.
But I do want to thank all the readers who’ve read this series—and read MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE, and all the other Transformers comics, too—from the beginning, or who’ve come in during the run, or who are just joining us. Thanks for being there, hope you’ve enjoyed the ride so far, and it just gets better from here on out.

PAGE 1- This issue is told from the POV of Arcee. Was the challenge of finding her voice difficult, given her history as being the only established female character in the IDW universe?
JOHN BARBER: Arcee’s personality was something that Andrew Griffith (the regular RID artist) and I talked about even before the first issue was done. So, the real leg-work on finding my take on her, on getting to know her voice, was really done a while back. I mean, like most of the other characters here, I’ve been writing her for a year-and-a-half or so.
There’s an unusual extra scrutiny on her, for a few reasons. Her basic set-up in the IDW comics is pretty different than her set-up in the classic G-1 incarnation, or in Prime, or wherever. More so than most of the other characters, Arcee as handed to me was different in this universe in some fundamental ways.
Add to that that she IS the only female character that we’ve seen in this comic book universe… well, nobody looks at Ironhide or Swoop or whoever and thinks that their actions at any given moment are a statement being made about all males in the real world. Because there are hundreds—thousands—of other male characters in RID and MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE.
However, if Arcee does something, 100% of the female characters in the comic are doing that exact thing. I’m aware of that—but I try to deal with the specific character that she is. That’s kinda all I can do. Up to now, we haven’t had an issue narrated by her, because—for the sake of the story—the reader needed to be in the same position as most of the other characters, in not knowing her motivations or whose side she’s on. I’m glad to finally get readers into her head and see how she views the world.

PAGE 2- The late Metalhawk was the NAIL (an acronym meaning Non-Aligned Indigenous Lifeform—slang for neutral Cybertronians who returned to the planet) who got the most attention. Did you intend for him to always be their voice or where there other characters originally just as vocal as he was?
JOHN BARBER: Metalhawk was the de facto leader of the NAILs, and—like Arcee—he has to sort of walk the line between the general people he represented, and the specifics of his personality. But in Metalhawk’s case, it was a thing he was aware of; that was his actual relationship he had with the other NAILs, not his relationship with the reader.
We got a little page-time with the NAILs on the ground—Skybyte, Hipotank, Tappet, Zetca, everybody at Blurr’s bar—during RID’s run, but Metalhawk was definitely the main character from that group, from the onset.

PAGE 3- Is Starscream purely a believer in his “destiny” to leader Cybertron at this point (See RID 2012 Annual) or could this simply be just another way to have what he’s always wanted?
JOHN BARBER: Starscream absolutely thinks the prophecy—any prophecy—is nonsense. It’s a means to an end, like literally everything else in Starscream’s life. To Starscream, there is no difference between what’s true and false—just what helps him and what doesn’t. But we see more of what makes him tick in issue 20.

PAGE 4- With the planet still evolving after its restart as seen all the way back in RID #1, is the unknown the greatest fear these guys have for not wanting to leave? And given what Ironhide may have said about what he encountered?
JOHN BARBER: Yeah, they don’t know what they’re facing. Megatron’s program of driving everyone crazy when they leave the city SHOULD be gone… but is it? They’re worried. I think the larger worry is: they lost. They lost to Starscream. And they lost in a way that—at this particular moment—is very difficult to recover from.
They’re not in a position to retake the city of Iacon right now… and that’s certainly what they want to do.

PAGE 5- Bumblebee and the other Autobots are leaving Iacon—maybe for good. Was this the only choice they could have made given everything that’s happened? Or could there have been other roads they could have been taken?
JOHN BARBER: Well, they could have not lost. Starscream outmaneuvered them, and now—right now, at this moment—there’s no real way for them to stay without making things worse.
Leaving is the less-bad option compared to getting in another shooting war in the city. They know they’d wind up fighting the people they want to protect—and at this stage, it’s not just the Autobots that don’t want to start fighting.
Neither Autobots nor Decepticons wants to start killing civilians, here. Megatron’s out of the picture, but this time, the substitute Decepticon leadership isn’t the maniacal leadership that occasionally takes over—it’s Soundwave leading, not Scorponok, so the decisions are a little more measured.
We’re starting to see the various groups that are coming into being. We have Shockwave in the Crystal City last issue; here we’ve got the Autobots reeling from the battle of Iacon. Next issue we’ll look in on Orion Pax—the former Optimus Prime—as he gets drawn further into the oncoming DARK CYBERTRON event.

Also Heft 18 war mal wieder super.

SPOILER!!!

PREVIEWSworld: Given your long tenure as an artist in the comic industry, what is it about drawing Transformers that you find attractive as an illustrator? Does it do something to your brain when you find yourself focusing more on metal rather than flesh? Or was it the concept of Dark Cybertron that made you sit up in class and hold your hand up? How did Phil Jimenez get on board this project?
Phil Jimenez: Fun. As I get older, that’s the “buzzword” for me, re: why I choose assignments. Fun. What we do is sort of ridiculous in the big picture (certainly, we’re not searching for a cure for cancer), and so my goal is to choose assignments that will be fun to read, fun to draw, and on characters to which I have some sort of attachment, especially from my childhood.
And after I tried pitching a JLA/Transformers crossover, I realized just how much fun these characters were to draw, how rich the tapestry of their history was, how many wonderful characters there were, scatted among the Autobots and Decepticons, and was invited by IDW and Hasbro to contribute more. I guess I did okay with my JLA/ Transformers samples; I “got” the Transformers enough to be hired to draw more.
I actually don’t think drawing Transformers is any different from drawing anything else; I still use the same rules and tools, and still think about character in the same way. That said, the Transformers have different shapes and edges that *do* effect composition, but mostly in a fun, challenging way.

PREVIEWSworld: How do you prepare to bring visuals to life based on James Roberts and John Barber’s script? Do you have particular references you find essential? Or is there no bible? I’m curious to know what you think about Transformers character designs. Should they remain untouched versus what could be open to interpretation? Look at how Superman once had a blue and white costume. Are any of these creative liberties ever considered, or do you take a more conservative approach towards rendering these titans?
Phil Jimenez: I have to say, the script — written in old Marvel plot style — was perfect. Great pacing, great fun. Since I was only doing loose breakdowns, what I was really worried about were the storybeats and sequential storytelling. I knew the intimate details of the world would be filled in by Andrew, the actual penciller on the book.
And because my contribution was so relatively minor, I don’t feel like I’m there to make wholesale changes on the stuff. I’m there to do my best to bring this pre-existing material to “life” and to make them “read” properly to their thousands of fans. I already feel like a bit of an interloper, just “dropping in” for a bit. I don’t wanna muck with the character designs too much if I’m just visiting, you know?

PREVIEWSworld: How does the artwork convey the tone and atmosphere of Dark Cybertron? Did you find yourself having to do more than one draft to get where you wanted to be in your layouts?
Phil Jimenez: There were a couple of pages that I worked and reworked layouts; and, of course, the inevitable moment when I totally reconfigured a two page spread but discovered the penciller had already finished working over the original designs. GAH! I hate that. Still, the script was so strong the visuals were all there for me; I just had to figure out how to compose them.

PREVIEWSworld: Describe your work relationship with fellow artists Andrew Griffith and Brendan Cahill. Have you worked together before this team? What is it about the synergy that’s to your liking? How do the three of you communicate during the creative process?
Phil Jimenez: I drew these layouts and Andrew finished them. They’re awesome. I have no idea if he had any fun, but I hope he did. The stuff looks amazing!

PREVIEWSworld: If fans want to reach out to you to comment about the book, is there a Facebook or Twitter page they can find to drop you a line?
Phil Jimenez: Philjimeneznyc@twitter and @facebook.

Wir haben hier ein Interview mit Machern von IDW Transformers Comic Dark Cybertron, John Barber und James Roberts.

John Barber: The setup has been that Rodimus has been leading a group of Autobots (well, mostly Autobots) on a starship, the Lost Light, in search of the legendary Knights of Cybertron. Meanwhile Bumblebee tried to forge a new government on Cybertron, but failed, letting Starscream take over the planet. While that was going on, Optimus Prime—now calling himself Orion Pax—has gone off into space and hooked up with a couple other Autobots.

So, yeah—they are pretty spread out, and Dark Cybertron will start to draw them together. Shockwave’s got a plan, and it’s a big plan, and it encompasses a lot of the universe. The Lost Light gets drawn into one part of the plan, and everybody on Cybertron gets pulled another way… right away, Orion Pax hooks up with the Lost Light crew and he and Rodimus team up to go into a dark dimension called the Dead Universe that’s as horrifying as it sounds.

James Roberts: In the nigh-on 30 years since Transformers began, there have never been two ongoing Transformers comic books running side by side, focusing on different sets of characters in different parts of the same universe. And so this is our first opportunity to indulge in some proper crossover action.

In the past, with big Transformers stories, the sense of occasion has come exclusively from the size of the threat. In the case of Dark Cybertron, yes, the threat is big—the threat is massive, in fact—but in addition to that, you get the thrill of seeing characters from separate storylines mix it up with each other. In a way, it's the Transformers version of the Avengers movie after 50 issues spent building up our respective casts.

Roberts: As I’ve said before, the story is also fun because you get to mix-and-match the characters: Character A from Robots In Disguise, might share a scene or a subplot—or maybe, in some cases, just a single panel—with Character B from More Than Meets The Eye. As the story builds and the various threads start converging, you get more and more of these team-ups, and I hope readers get as much of a thrill out of the combined cast as I did. Hey, I’m a Transformers fan of old, and Dark Cybertron makes me feel like I did when I used to read the weekly Transformers comic in the UK and they’d have multi-part epics where all the big name characters from different timelines—Optimus, Galvatron, Ultra Magnus, etc.—were on the same page.

Barber: And if you’re coming at this from the other side—if you’re a fan of big-scale action with real characters that have real feelings—I think this comic will show you that the Transformers comics might be for you.

I’m excited to get to do a story this big, this far reaching, that pulls as much together as this does—while still reaching for the future. I think where we leave the characters at the end of this is really, really exciting.

The storyline promises to bring in some big characters, including Headmasters, and also Sentinel Prime, who is the space shuttle we’ve seen lineart of. Hollywood Reporter are also reporting that this will be the middle chapter in a new storyline that started with Combiner Wars, and is set to conclude in 2017-18 with an as yet unnamed third chapter. The overall trilogy is being called, Prime Wars, and is being designed by Hasbro to unite toys, the IDW comics, and Machinima’s animation into a single multimedia approach.

Wir halten euch weiter auf dem Laufenden.
